Local families consider storm shelters in wake of deadly tornado

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -

Local families are taking a serious look at storm shelters in the aftermath of Monday's deadly tornado in Oklahoma. Those shelters could mean the difference between life and death when faced with one of those powerful storms, according to experts.

Joe Ellis, the owner of Georgia Tornado Shelters in Walton County, said that he's received numerous calls since the tornado struck from people asking about home-based shelters. They can cost between $5,300 and $8,000, he said

Ellis believes the shelters saved lives in Oklahoma.

"I'm sure there are a lot of them used out there and this would save your life," said Ellis..

Ellis says that since 2008, his company has installed more than 100 shelters in Georgia.

Beth Bootz, who works for the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, grew up around Moore, Okla. and has family in nearby Midwest City who escaped harm during the monster twister. Bootz said that her sister took cover in a storm shelter when devastation struck.

"Several of my friends that live in the area have built these storm shelters, so they feel safe about them," Bootz said.

The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief is sending aid to the devastated areas in Oklahoma, including a mobile command center and an 18-wheeler loaded with goods.
