3 injured, including 2 children, in Detroit house fire

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Arson investigators are on the scene of an early morning house fire that injured three people, including two children, on the city's east side.

Residents of the multiple family flat on the 800 block of Navahoe say the flames began around 4 a.m. Wednesday while seven children slept inside. Leah Williams, who lives on the second floor, was able to make it out with her two children and her godson. "This is not the first fire, this is the second fire that was done within this week," Wilson tells FOX 2. "The first time it was just on the porch and they were able to put it out."

The first fire crews arrived on scene to find a three-month-old child with burns to the head and arms on the front porch with a woman and another baby who escaped the flames. Her six-year-old boy and another woman were still trapped inside. Wilson showed the batallion chief the back way in. "They got the baby," said Wilson. "He was very quick on his toes. He didn't worry about not having protective gear on. He just wanted to save the child."

Firefighters pulled the unresponsive child from the home, revived him and transported him in their own rig to Children's Hospital. The woman was pulled from the home and taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital by ambulance. At last check, she was in critical condition.

Crews on the scene were furious when FOX 2 arrived saying the two closest fire stations were closed due to brown outs. "It's frustrating to the men and to the department," said DFD Battalion Chief Robert Zygmongowicz. "We're short-handed and if these companies were open it might have made a little bit of a difference."

While crews may have been delayed, the fire victims were extremely thankful for their tremendous efforts.

"I'm glad that we do have a good fire department," said Wilson. "They were quick. They were quick."

The investigation is ongoing.
