When it comes to sunscreen, is cheaper better?  Consumer Reports says so

Consumer Reports reviewed 12 popular products looking at SPF accuracy, UVB and UVA protection, scent, and staining.  They found that cheaper brands from Target and Walmart actually fared the best overall.

Target's UP & UP Sport SPF 50 was the top-rated sunscreen with a score of 80 out of 100.  It costs $6.94.  Equate Ultra Protection SPF 50 from Walmart had a score of 77 (it costs $7.50), and Coppertone SPF 50 at $11 was right behind with a rating of 75.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S.

Consumer Reports also offers these tips for sunscreen use:
  • Apply 15 to 30 minutes before you head into the sun
  • Reapply after you take a swim or every 2 hours
  • Higher SPF isn't guaranteed; try buying one that has broad-spectrum protection, is water resistant, and has an SPF of at least  40
