Boy In Critical Condition After Being Tortured, Mom & Boyfriend Arrested

Palmdale, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A 32-year-old Palmdale man accused of inflicting critical injuries on his girlfriend's 8-year-old son was jailed today in lieu of $1 million bail and facing a court appearance next week.

Isauro Aguirre was arrested Thursday and was being held at the sheriff's Lancaster Station. He is due in court in Lancaster on Tuesday, according to sheriff's online jail records. Aguirre is suspected of attempted murder in the apparent torture of the boy, who was hospitalized in critical condition suffering from a skull fracture, several broken ribs and burns, said Sgt. Brian Hudson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Special Victims Bureau.

The boy's mother, 29-year-old Pearl Fernandez, was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after she admitted to being present during the assault and not doing anything to stop it, Hudson said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were sent around 11 p.m. Wednesday to the 200 block of East Avenue Q-10 on a report that the boy was not breathing, Hudson said. When they arrived they found the child had numerous injuries indicative of child abuse, he said. They treated the boy at the scene and then took him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a hospital in Los Angeles, Hudson said.

Aguirre was questioned by detectives and "admitted to causing the injuries to the victim,'' Hudson said, adding that two other children in the residence were taken into protective custody by the county Department of Children and Family Services.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
