Section Of 405 Carpool Lane Opens To Commuters

Los Angeles, CA -

Part of the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass is wider than it was yesterday.

Last month we told you that this widening project thru the Sepulveda Pass was nearly 100 million dollars over budget and a year behind schedule. That created a big stir and calls for an investigation of the project that was supposed to be finished this year!

We also reported that because of all-of-that metro had decided to start opening completed portions of the new roadway on the northbound side as quickly as they could finish work on them. And, that one part of the new car pool lane would open up in May another part in June and, so on.

Well, this morning around 5:15 the contractors removed the orange cones lining the new concrete lane and opened it up for general traffic. That new nearly 2 mile stretch between I-10 and Santa Monica will accommodate 1500 to 2000 more cars an hour.

Eventually when the entire 10 mile stretch is completed this new outside lane will be for general traffic and the #1 or inside lane will become a car pool lane. Until then all northbound lanes are for general traffic.

To those who have worked so hard to expand this freeway there was a good feeling even though a bad accident made for horrible traffic on this day that really was a milestone for metro, Kiewit Construction, Caltrans and all of those whose daily work involves making the 405 a little wider and a lot better.
