Police search for hit and run driver accused of killing 11-year-old boy

PHOENIX -

One week after investigating a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of one of their own, Phoenix Police are looking for a driver believed to be responsible for the death of an 11-year-old boy.

It happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex on 35th Avenue near Indian School Road.

The driver that backed into Enoc Quijada was allegedly impaired and Sunday night, police asked anyone who saw anything to come forward and help them identify this man.

"We just heard a lady screaming for her child," said Gilbert Flores, a witness.

Residents of the Fountain Head Apartments heard the cries for help just before 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

The mother of an 11-year-old boy was distraught after her son was hit and dragged by a silver Isuzu. Moments later, the vehicle crashed into a cinder block wall.

Police say evidence indicates the driver failed to remove his security club from the steering wheel before he backed out of a parking spot, so he couldn't brake or steer.

They believe it was a contributing factor in the accident.

"It was backed all the way in. All I could see was, like, the hood of it because it was sitting on top of the bricks. I could just see the front of the truck--the SUV," said Rondeau Simmons.

Witnesses told investigators the driver got out of the vehicle, helped pull the little boy out from underneath, walked away and never came back.

"He needs to turn himself in...because I'm a mother so, you know, I can understand the mother's pain," said Mirna Coronado.

Neighbors drove by the gapping hole Sunday morning, where a lone candle was lit in the boy's memory.

"It's real sad to the family, the little kid's family, my condolences to them," said Joe Razo, a neighbor.

Police have only said they are looking for a black male.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
