Former Falcons player urges others to plan for life after football

A former Atlanta Falcons tight end has moved his focus from the football field to the kitchen.  Reggie Kelly now has his own salsa company, and he says he wants to show other professional athletes why it's important to plan for their future while they're still at the top of their game.

Kelly started his business after retiring from the NFL, but he says the dream behind it began years before his career ever ended.

"I started preparing for life after the game of football as soon as I was drafted," he told FOX 5. 

Kelly says players should start planning now for what will happen to their lives after the game is over.

"I didn't know how my career would go," he explained.  "I didn't know if it was going to come to a screeching halt as a lot of guys' careers do."

Kelly's company, Kyvan, sells everything form jambalaya sauce to blackberry-flavored honey.  Right now, it is sold in metro Atlanta area Walmart stores, but there are plans to expand throughout the southeast.

"If you do the little things right, the big things will follow, and that's what carried me through my NFL career," Kelly said.  "Gave me 13 years in the NFL, but it has also carried me in life after football."

Kelly says the best advice he can give to those looking to embark on a new career is to surround yourself with mentors and those who will support your future goals.
