Double check your medical bills for costly errors

Posted: Updated:

Many of us open a medical bill and assume that what's written down on it is correct. Well, not so fast.  The FOX 5 I-Team found you should double check those charges before you pay that bill.

The I-Team's own Dana Fowle was over billed at a doctor's visit.  She says she noticed it, fought back, and won.

Fowle said her insurance company rejected the bill from her routine doctor's office. The reason amounted to a simple clerical error, but getting it corrected proved far from easy. And Fowle knows she knows she's not the only person who's been in her situation.

According to the American Medical Association, one in 10 bills by a private health insurance company will feature a billing mistake.

Here are some instances in which you should be sure to ask:

Your claim was rejected?  Double check that. Rejection often means no one actually reviewed your bill. There may have been a coding error and it was spit out.

Denied means that someone on the receiving end of the bill said, "No." The insurance company decided it will not pay your bill. Fowle says you should still call to ask why.

If you use a Medical Savings Account – much like a Flexible Spending Account – and use a group-issued debit card to pay for it, then make sure you are truly paying for the service or services you received.

According to BankRate.com, most patients just swipe, pay and go. But, more and more people are double-checking their medical bills and discovering they were actually billed for a more expensive service.

Ultimately, remember that your bill comes out of your pocket. Don't take any chances!
