3 Stars Of TV Show 'Storm Chasers' Killed In Okla. Tornado

Posted: Updated:

Rescuers are still trying to locate seven missing people in the Oklahoma City area following Friday's deadly tornadoes and flash floods. At least 16 people are confirmed dead.

Three of the victims are storm chasers the National Weather Service says were involved in tornado research.

The EF-3 tornado hit El Reno with winds up to 165 mph, and came during rush hour.

This is the second series of twisters to hit the Oklahoma City area in just two weeks.

The three men are well known for their daring work on the Discovery Channel's show "Storm Chasers."

They included a father-and-son team, 55-year-old Tim Samaras and his 24-year-old son, Paul.

The third member of their team, 45-year-old Carl Young, also lost his life in the twister.

The trio traveled in search of bad weather, hoping to warn people ahead of tornadoes.

Tim Samaras was considered a leader in storm chasing research.

His brother says his work helped to save many lives.

"He developed all of these tools to give ourselves a much more, better first alert of tornadoes so that he could help the community from the standpoint of much more early warning. Be proactive. And ultimately his goal was actually saving lives through the technology that he's been able to develop," Jim Samaras said.

The mayor of El Reno says this tragic loss emphasizes the need to take any and all tornado reports seriously.

The Discovery Channel dedicated a show Sunday night to the three men, capping the broadcast with a tribute that read, "In memory of Tim Samaras, Carl Young and Paul Samaras, who died Friday, May 31, doing what they love, chasing storms."
