DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Detroit Chapter of AIGA, the professional association of design, is proud to announce the third annual Beyond the Bar: An LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) Design Showcase for LGBT designers and illustrators in the greater Detroit metro area.

Beyond the Bar 2013 will be held on Thursday, June 6th, 2013 at the Start Gallery in Detroit from 7-10pm.

Beyond the Bar is a celebration of the contributions that LGBT designers bring to the applied arts.

The design showcase seeks to dispel the career stereotypes of this unique subculture.

LGBT designers were asked to submit their favorite project during a Call for Entries in April and May 2013.

The design showcase and reception on June 6th, 2013 will feature appetizers, wine, and beer, along with musical selections from DJ Lena. An art auction of selected pieces will also be held with proceeds benefiting the Ruth Ellis Center.

Attendees will also have a chance to vote on their favorite piece in the show, top vote getters will then be displayed for the rest of the weekend during Motor City Pride.

Suggested donations of five dollars will be collected at the door.

This event is open to the public, one night only and advance registration is not required.
