Jury selection process continues in Bulger trial

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The arduous jury selection process in the trial of reputed gangster James "Whitey" Bulger is set to continue over the next several days.

Attorneys are expected Thursday to continue reviewing the questionnaires that the pool of about 860 prospective jurors has filled out.

Attorneys will be back in front of U.S. District Judge Denise Casper on Friday to pare down the pool by excusing jurors, based on their questionnaire answers.

Next Monday and Tuesday, the numbers will be further cut down after follow-up questions from attorneys, as well as challenges by prosecutors and the defense.

Casper says she's planning opening statements next Wednesday morning. That would mean, the 18-member jury - including six alternates - is seated by then. Attorneys expect a four-month trial.

Bulger has pleaded not guilty to participating in 19 murders.
