CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man who fled the country after he was charged with murder in Chicago more than 30 years ago was arrested Friday at O'Hare International Airport, the Cook County Sheriff's office said Saturday.

Ata Yousef El Ammouri, 65, was taken into custody on warrants for murder and jumping bail after he landed at O'Hare Friday night, according to the sheriff's office.

El Ammouri is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Joe Harris on July 22, 1979 after he walked out of El Amourri's store in the 500 block of 67th Street without paying for a can of beer, the sheriff's office said.

He posted $100,000 bail when he was charged with the murder in 1979, but did not show up to court hearings. Authorities believed he had fled the country to avoid prosecution.

The sheriff's office said he flew from Jordan, where he lives, to Chicago to attend a graduation.

He appeared in bond court Saturday morning and was ordered held without bail.

"Today's capture of Ata Yousef El Ammouri should send a message that the simple passage of time does not eradicate our commitment to bringing fugitives to justice," Sheriff Tom Dart said in a release.

El Ammouri is next scheduled to appear in court June 10.
