College vs. the pros: What's your flavor?

Posted: Updated:

Are you are fan of pro sports? Or do you love the college teams?

In my two previous TV markets, it's been all about the college sports, especially the SEC and ACC. In Columbia--even if you didn't attend South Carolina-- many people who live there embrace the university and claim the Gamecocks their own.

Here in Atlanta, it's been a WAY different kind of experience. While some here are diehard Dawgs fans or relentlessly root for Georgia Tech, nothing seems to top the pro teams. To me at least, it seems more about the Falcons, Braves and Hawks. For those of you reading that live in the ATL, how lucky are you to be in a city that has a professional team in all the major sports? Hockey fans, I know you're still upset. RIP Thrashers. And, there are several college teams right in our backyard too with Georgia Tech, Georgia State, etc.

I guess I grew up in Florida when the pro teams there weren't that good. I never really rooted for the Bucs, the Magic or the Devil Rays (yes, DEVIL Rays -- it's what they were back when I was growing up!). Though, the Buccaneers did win a Super Bowl back in 2002. Since then... Not much.

I went to UF (don't hate!) and that's really where my love of college athletics grew. In the southeast, it doesn't get much better than college football. Of course, it helps when the SEC has dominated the NCAA football scene, winning the last seven titles.

So, yes I consider myself a fan of mostly college sports. Though, the Atlanta pro teams are really growing on me and I'm considering adopting them as my teams. :) It's always funny when people ask what teams I root for, and I don't really have an answer as far as pro teams go. I guess it helps with the whole being "unbiased" thing since I cover sports teams for a living.

Why do I enjoy the college sports? I guess I enjoy the competition a little more, sometimes I feel the players want it more. I like the hype that goes along with it. When there's finally a playoff in college football, I think a lot of people are going to enjoy the postseason a lot more. With the current format in place, I feel some fans don't care too much about what happens after the regular season. With basketball, there's nothing like March Madness. NOTHING. The NBA playoffs just don't compare as far as I'm concerned (though I still watch them and still enjoy them!). People who don't even care about college basketball fill out a bracket. It's insane, and I love it. The competition, the intensity, the heartbreak, every emotion is there. I feel like there is more of that in college than in the pro sports realm.

It got me thinking though, why are YOU a fan? Do you love the home town pro teams, or are college sports the way you go? OR, do you root for both?

So let me know what you think on my Facebook and Twitter pages!

Until next time, peace out!

Last week, I had the opportunity to finally cover THE circus. Yes, THE SEC Media Days. College football really gets my juices flowing, and I couldn't wait to get to Hoover, Alabama.

The All-Star Break is here, and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Braves.  They're hurting-- literally.  But can the team stay healthy enough to make a playoff run?
