Confirmed: EF-0 Tornado Touched Down In Delaware

The National Weather Service has confirmed that it was, in fact, a tornado that touched down in Delaware late Monday afternoon.

The EF-0 tornado touched down at 4:47 p.m. near Newark with an estimated maximum wind speed of 80 mph and a path width of 150 yards.

The twister traveled a total of 0.4 miles, according to the NWS.

There were fortunately no fatalities or injuries reported.

At Robscott Manor, folks are breathing a collected sigh of relief. No one killed. No one even injured despite that minor tornado that rumbled through just about 24 hours ago.

The tornado did damage homes and cars throughout this neighborhood. All over the neighborhood, clean up crews were trimming away, carting off tree limbs smashed to pieces by mother nature's late afternoon ambush. Folks here say it all began and ended in a matter of seconds.

"I just felt a big blast of wind and I ran into my basement. Came up just a minute later and I saw all this," said homeowner Pat Ryan, describing the damage.

Winds touching 80 miles-an-hour splintered some trees. Rain soaked ground allowed others to simply topple over.

"We were sitting in the kitchen in the back," described homeowner George Ains. "and I heard a tremendous noise. Something I have never heard before. I said what the heck's going on here? and then I heard a loud thump."

A neighbor's tree ripped from the ground, tearing the lawn like someone's carpeting. It took down siding and gutters on George's home. But nothing more.

"We were very fortunate that we weren't closer to it, because it came down that fast."

Down the street a downed tree cleaved Bruce's ranch home nearly in half. Lucky no one was home at the time.

"I was called by my neighbor and thought he was pranking me. Not a prank," said Bruce Couden.

At Jeffery Stone's house, a tree came down in his back yard and took out some roofing, a shed and a gazebo housing a hot tub.

And his home is up for sale.

"It's still for sale," says Stone. "If anyone is interested, there's the number right there. Give them a nice discount."

The Enhanced Fujita scale (EF) ranks tornados on a scale from 0-5. An EF-0's winds range between 65 and 85 mph.

The last tornado reported in Delaware was back in September in Camden, Del. That, too, was an EF-0.
