Highway 169 construction quickly causes headaches

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Anyone who had to drive on Highway 169 in the past few days knows it's been slow-going now that construction has begun on three bridges, reducing the roadway down to one lane.

Jess Mueller and Andy Gullikson both work at the Depot Coffee House in Hopkins, and they have to get there before 7 a.m. Both were well aware that the lane closures had begun, but even back streets became a congested mess.

The following three bridges are being rehabbed this summer:

- 2nd Street
- Excelsior Boulevard
- Nine Mile Creek

The roadwork is forcing commuters in both directions into one lane only, and there won't be any relief until the project is done in late July.

As Mueller and Gullikson found, the side streets meander around -- and the other nearby highways aren't exactly empty.
