The Talker: Comparing Chicago and Boston

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A lot of people learn their geography through sports. With the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals, Chicago itself is in the spotlight.

One example is an email blast sent out by the online real estate brokerage Movoto. Using census data and other statistics, it gives a side-by-side comparison of Chicago and Boston to give a sense of what each city is like to live in. We looked at their info and found some more on our own.

Here are a few statistics:

  • Chicago is a much bigger than Boston. We have 2.7 million people, compared to Boston's 636,000.
  • In terms of land, Chicago is 228 square miles. Boston is 48. This means Boston is a slightly more crowded city than Chicago.
  • From 2010 to 2012, Boston's population grew by 3 percent. Chicago grew by 0.7 percent.
  • Bostonians are more likely to get college degrees and graduate degrees. 43 percent of their residents have at least a bachelor's degree. The number in Chicago is 33 percent.
  • The typical household income in Chicago is $47,000. In Boston it's $52,000.
  • Boston helped spark the American Revolution, but Chicago has more veterans: 3.7 percent of our population, to 3.1 percent of Boston's.
  • 47 percent of Chicagoans own the homes they live in. In Boston, the ownership rate is 35 percent. That's probably because prices are much better in Chicago. The typical value of a home here is $261,000. In Boston, it's $382,000.
  • Movoto cited a statistic that puts Chicago's so-called crime index at 582. That's 53 percent higher than Boston's crime index.
  • Unemployment is also much higher in Chicago: 10.4 percent to 5.8 percent.
  • Here's a bit of trivia about the two hockey cities: the Blackhawks and bruins were each founded by food tycoons. Hawks' founder Frederic McLaughlin was in the coffee business. The Bruins founder Charles Adams helped build a chain of grocery stores.
