Atlanta picking up speed to meet cyclists' need

Posted: Updated:

More and more people are grabbing their bikes and hitting the streets these days. In the last decade, the number of cyclists in Atlanta has brown 400 percent.

Some are calling it a cycling revolution and SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley has a look at how the City of Atlanta is rising to meet the demand. By 2016, the City is expecting to be in the top U.S. cities for cycling. Right now, they're closer to be ranked 17th – but it's a goal that many, many people are working toward.

And, just as Atlanta is increasing its efforts toward cycling, they want to make sure locals and visitors both are ready to enjoy cycling while being safe, too.

Here are some basic safety tips:

- Avoid unnecessary risks: As a driver and a cyclist, those extra five seconds you save by running a yellow traffic light could cost you a lot more if you or someone else isn't paying attention.

 - Also, the key for cyclists is to be visible. Don't hug the curb. Ride closer to the middle of the driving lane. You may feel rude as a cyclist as traffic slows behind your, but the odds of a driver seeing you at all greatly increase.
