Tired after watching Game 1 in triple OT? Try being the goalie

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you think you were tired after watching five hours of hockey, Corey Crawford must be exhausted after his 51 saves.

Hawks teammates praised Corey Crawford for the win and fans at Johnnie's Ice House are still feeling the excitement from the Hawks triple-overtime victory.

11-year-old Kyle Becerra and fellow teammates are a part of a not for profit inner-city program called Hockey on Your Block.

"In the car, on the way coming here, I kept on thinking about game and if I could play like that. So that got me going," Becerra says.

Akeem Howard agrees that goalie Corey Crawford was the biggest hero last night "because he made a lot of saves."

That's right. Goalie Corey Crawford made some huge saves, stopping 51 out of 54 shots Wednesday night against the Bruins.

"My guess is he is pretty sore today," Dr. Jeff Mjaanes says. "I'm just glad not in his position."

Rush University's Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Jeff Mjaanes is one of the team physicians for the Bulls and White Sox. He says the physical and mental pressure on a hockey netminder is unique.

"For a guy like Corey, he needs amazing core strength," Dr. Mjaanes explains. "He has to stand in this position and be pretty much tense and ready to move at all times. He has to be  sharp mentally and also has to be sharp physically."

And keeping hydrated is key.  Dr Mjaanes estimates the players each lost at least 2 liters of sweat last night.

"The equipment itself weighs a lot, so he's got the pads and he's got the helmet," he adds. "Then, you add in the sweat, because the sweat actually stays in and makes the clothes heavier."

The good thing is the Hawks have two full days of rest before Game 2 and Dr. Mjaanes says the focus is on getting rid of the soreness before that game.
