American Idol Contestant Ripped Off While Performing at a School

Posted: Updated:

They say no good deed goes unpunished and a former American Idol contestant learned that while performing for kids at a school,  his phone and wallet were allegedly stolen by a parent!

Todrick Hall, a season 9 American Idol contestant gave a free performance at Hazard Elementary School in Santa Ana Thursday. While signing autographs and taking photos with students, Hall put his iPhone down, along with a case that doubles as a wallet.  Police say a students mom stole his belongings.

"Well thats bad for the kids first of all, second of all we received a phone call from the school just to let the parents know if you find something at the school, you know, you have to return it back," said Luis Mendoza, his kids are students at Hazard Elementary.

Bertha Avalos, a students mom, was arrested for grand theft.  Avalos was allegedly the person who took off with Hall's iPhone 5, as well as credit cards and cash.  Police say Hall caught the alleged thief thanks to an app called "Find My iPhone."  The app led Hall and a security guard to a grocery store on Harbor and Garden Grove Blvd.

"They see a kid from the school, they contact the student, they see his mother, the mother sees our victim and attempts to get away," said Anthony Bertanga, a spokesperson with the Santa Ana Police Department.  But eventually  Avalos allegedly confessed and gave Hall's wallet and phone back.

After leaving the store, Hall called police who later arrested Avalos at home.

Luis Mendoza says he had a talk with his kids about what happened, this is what his young daughter Alicia Mendoza told FOX 11, "I think it was bad for a kid or a parent to do that because if its not theirs they should just leave it there."

Police say if your phone is stolen you should report it and do not attempt to track it down yourself, because whoever stole it could be dangerous.
