Estranged Husband, Teacher Captured After Stabbing Wife To Death

(FOX 11 / CNS) A Los Angeles Unified elementary school teacher suspected of stabbing his estranged wife to death at a West Hills home where she had taken refuge was captured in San Bernardino County today, police said.

Michael Rodney Kane, 46, is accused of going to a home in the 7100 block of Deveron Ridge Road around 8 a.m. Saturday, wounding a friend who tried to protect Michelle Kane, then chasing her outside and stabbing her multiple times, said Lt. Warren Jones of the Los Angeles police Department's Topanga Station.

The 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Jones said. Her two children -- believed to be Kane's --were inside the home.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after midnight this morning in San Bernardino County, said Officer Susan Torres of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office.

Michael Kane is an elementary teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing website noted he has a multiple-subject teaching credential and is listed as being in good standing until Dec. 1, 2017. He has been a credentialed teacher since June 5, 1998.

Kane started as a substitute teacher in the LAUSD in 1997, followed by three permanent teaching assignments, the latest at Nestle Avenue Charter Elementary, in Tarzana, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Records show no disciplinary action, according to the newspaper.

As the LAPD Squad Car approached me I asked the suspect inside "Anything you want to say?" "NO!" "Nothing at all?" I asked. "Nothing at this time." The suspect is Michael Rodney Kane. He's the 46 year old man who, authorities say, stabbed his estranged wife Michelle to death in the middle of a West Hills street.

It was the end of a long day for detectives who said the found Kane's car behind a Yucca Valley community center around 10am Sunday then, 14 hours later found him in  a motel room in Joshua Tree. Police say they kicked down the door in order to arrest him. They had heard he might be injured and, in fact, found he had punctures and lacerations on his body. They said he was cooperative. They took him to a desert hospital for treatment and then brought him back to LA around 7:30am this morning. An hour later he was off to Van Nuys Jail to be booked for 1st degree murder.

An arraignment is expected Wednesday.
