Beat the Heat run brings awareness to summer safety

This isn't your typical race. This Saturday, in the middle of the Arizona heat at 2:47 in the afternoon, hundreds of folks are expected to hit the street running.

“Most of my friends say it’s crazy,” says Linda Knutson.

Linda Knutson will participate in one of the most unique races she's ever run in. It’s called Beat the Heat, a one of a kind race in Scottsdale on Saturday near the hottest time of day, 2:47 p.m.

“June 26, 1990 is when we hit the record of 122 degrees. We wanted to show the country you can come to Scottsdale, the valley and go to great resorts, go hiking, be careful, be prepared but you can have a great time in the valley in the summer,” says Jason Rose, co-founder of Scottsdale Beat the Heat run.

“Number one, what a great challenge for anyone who’s a runner. Number two, bring some awareness to the fact that the heat isn't good for everybody. A lot of elderly have trouble during this time,” says Linda.

Linda is running for H-2-OH, a group that helps senior citizens in times of distress like summer when the A/C may go out and need to be replaced.

Word of the race spread like wildfire. 800 people so far are expected to attend. There will also be plenty of firefighters and paramedics on-site.

“They’ll have 26 safety personnel on board, 3 ambulances and plenty of expertise on site to join the hydration stations, which are far more prevalent than you would usually see in a typical 10K race.”

Elite runners from across the country are visiting for this special race. It's organized by the owners of the Scottsdale Polo Championships.
