Family confronts burglars at Sandy Springs home

Posted: Updated:

Family members came face to face with burglars inside their Sandy Springs home.

Police said that the would-be crooks knocked on the door of the home.

"[A teenager] heard knocking at the door and he and another family member in the house and they didn't answer," said Lt. Sandy Rose of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

When a teenager and his sister didn't answer, the crooks broke in.

"He was in the process of stealing items when they came face to face, and that's when the victim saw the laser," Rose said. "I think, it wasn't pointed at him, he saw it on the wall."

That laser was attached to a pistol.  Sandy Springs investigators say once the thieves saw the victims, they ran away with jewelry and other household items.

In this case, no one was hurt but Lt. Rose says it's the most dangerous kind of burglary: when criminals and homeowners come face to face.

"In all cases, when a suspect is looking for a house, he's looking for an empty house. If someone's there, chances are he'll cut it and go somewhere else," said Rose.

Officers believe this kind of burglary could have been prevented if those inside had let the people knocking know they were there.

"Overall, looking at these over a number of years, I think it's best to go ahead and answer, Rose said. "You can say whatever you want…don't open the door."

Officers say when you're talking to the person on the other side of the door, don't open it.  If you believe something is suspicious, call 911.

Sandy springs police are still looking for the two men who broke into that home. They say they're looking for two white men. One of them was tall, very skinny with brown hair and a goatee. The other was driving a blue Mercedes.
