DETROIT (WJBK) -

The broken brickwork at 10700 Lyndon tips you off to what you will find inside. Forest Hill Cemetery is littered with trash and chocked with weeds and tall grass.

"This cemetery is not been taken care of for years. The grass is as tall as my waistline some days. It's unbelievable," said Latanya Garrett.

The parent of two told us she has is having trouble finding her mother's grave site.

"It's frustrating because I have two kids that are ten and eleven, and they wanted to see their grandmother's grave. So when I went to pursue it, to look for it, I couldn't find it," Garrett said.

Richard Oliver also said he has been unable to find his family's grave sites.

"It's terrible," he remarked.

The Fulton Butts, Senior Memorial Chapel has been vandalized. It appears someone breached a hole through the brick wall perhaps looking for anything of value.

But the real pain for surviving family members that visit is the grave sites of their loved ones.

"There are many loved ones here, and we don't know where they are because the gravestones are sinking," Garrett said. "The cemetery has not been maintained."

We talked with Bill Nowling, the spokesperson for Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr. Nowling said he will check into the maintenance schedule for city-owned cemeteries.

Family members we spoke with said they are allowed to use mowers and weed trimmers to tend to the grave sites, but they feel that should not be their responsibility.
