In the next few days, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. This law would prevent the federal government from giving same-sex couples the same benefits as married couples.
During a speech on the house floor Tuesday, George representative Phil Gingrey said that he believes a family needs a mother and a father.
He then took it a step further and said that children should take classes on traditional gender roles.
Gingrey, the leading Republican candidate for the Georgia senate, calls into question whether or not a gay couple can offer the same values as both a mother and father.
While he says he's not out of touch, Gingrey says he believes a family needs a mother and a father in order to survive.
