GLOBE, Ariz. -

Caught on camera -- a woman rescued from the back of a garbage truck in Globe. According to firefighters, the woman was sleeping in a dumpster when it was emptied into the truck and later compacted while she was still inside.

The fire chief with Globe Fire says this is something they've never seen. The woman climbed into a dumpster, fell asleep, and then the garbage truck came. It picked her up and threw her in the back.

"It was pretty unique," says Globe Fire Chief Al Gameros.

The Globe Fire Department responded to a bizarre rescue call Thursday. A 38-year-old woman trapped inside a garbage truck.

"Apparently the night before she was looking for a place to stay. She climbed into the dumpster of a large commercial dumpster, where she fell asleep."

Then Thursday morning, unbeknownst to the garbage truck driver, he picked up the container with the woman inside.

"He traveled on and probably dumped another 10 commercial dumpsters back into the back of that truck and he compacted it about 8 to 10 times, he said."

The woman was in the back of the truck for about 30 minutes and probably drove in the back of there for about a mile.

"Somebody heard some yelling, her head popped out of the top and the driver shut everything down at that time."

Rescuers freed the woman and pulled her out using a basket. The fire department says she was in stable condition at the time. She was flown to the hospital.

Rescuers say this could have been a lot worse.

"If that would have been a different garbage truck, that they run on these routes… also it could have been a 100 percent compactor. It would have given her less room in there."

Again, that woman was transported to the hospital -- her condition is not known. But fire fighters say she was talking and responsive when they pulled her out.
