Newly-expanded Piedmont Park opens

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The newly-expanded Piedmont Park opened in Atlanta on Thursday. It includes tons of new parkland space with pedestrian entrances, foot bridges and a forest with a thousand new trees.

The more than 15-acre green space is the first phase of the $43 million project.

"Together we've done so much to strengthen and improve Piedmont Park, and what I can pledge to you today is that this is only the beginning," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Joe McCannon, 72, said he enjoys the new walking and running trails. The lifelong Atlantan says the new and improved Piedmont Park is a far cry from the area he remembers as a boy.

"Oh, it was like lumber yards and warehouses and that sort of thing, and now it's turning into the Central Park of Atlanta," he said.

Recent Kansas City transplants Vincent and Zhenya Kelly were searching for the badminton court, but got distracted by the beauty of the expanded park.

"It's incredible. I appreciate a city that does that sort of thing. A lot of places, they don't do that, and I'm not there for that reason. I like Atlanta," said Vincent Kelly.

Midtown Atlanta resident Joy Johnston said she loves the new pedestrian entrances that give her easier access to piedmont.

"Well, I just love how it connects with the Beltline, and it helps people on the other side of the neighborhood have easier access to the park and the park's facilities," said Johnston.

Some of the new amenities at the expanded Piedmont Park include new basketball courts, bocce ball courts, a new aquatic center, event facility and an expanded dog park.
