Daredevil Nik Wallenda preps for walk across Grand Canyon gorge

Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

He’s already walked across Niagara Falls on a tightrope, hung from a hovering helicopter by his teeth, and now, daredevil Nik Wallenda plans to walk across the little Colorado River gorge near the Grand Canyon on a tightrope.

“In two days I will be fulfilling a lifetime dream.”

Nik Wallenda is a 34-year-old seventh generation high-wire artist, and he's a member of the famous Flying Wallendas circus family.

His great grandfather Karl Wallenda died after fall in Puerto Rico at 73. Several other family members have also perished while performing hi-wire stunts.

“My family has done this forever, my great grandfather said life is on the wire, everything else is just waiting.”

Addressing the media Friday in Flagstaff, Nik Wallenda said it’s his faith that gets him through.

“I find my peace in my faith in Jesus Christ my lord and savior and I have confidence that if something were to happen to me I’d know where I am going.”

Sunday, Wallenda will attempt to walk on a wire stretched across the little Colorado River gorge near the Grand Canyon.

“I’m ready, I feel great. I feel prepared, I have trained again in Sarasota with extreme winds, winds to the point where we would cut off the walk at that point and postpone it if they were ever that high inclement weather conditions -- mentally I feel like I am prepared. I would like to get on that cable right now.”

Wallenda will walk across a wire suspended 15-hundred feet above the river. He won't be wearing a tether and there won't be a safety net.

“I say a prayer with my family and again give them hugs and kisses and say I will see you in a little bit and I am a man who believes that words are strong, that’s why I say I will see you in a little bit and not goodbye.”

The event will be broadcast "live" -- with a 10-second delay -- Sunday on the Discovery Channel.
