ABSECON, N.J. -

"I was fighting the dogs for about a good 5 to 10 minutes," said Louis Nell. He's haunted by a vivid memory of a traumatic experience that won't soon go away.

"They were very vicious. They had a purpose and they were going to accomplish that purpose. I was pushing and pushing but they're strong dogs," said Louis. He recalls around 1pm Saturday when he says two pit bulls came charging up his walkway. Louis's wife Linda was sitting in a living room chair. Their golden retriever Chrissy was laying on the floor. The main door was open but he says the dogs tore in through the screen door.

"They jumped right on our dog. I heard Linda scream and I heard the growling," that's when Louis says he rushed from the kitchen and found the pit bulls who they recognized as one of their neighbor's dogs, tossing his golden retriever around. That's when his biggest fear set in.

"All I could think of is if they get past our dog then it's Linda. They would go for her," he said. Louis says he tried to push the pit bulls out with a chair and pin them beneath it but says eventually he fell and the dogs went for him. His hand is now bandaged from the attack.

"The dog got me right here on the hand and that thing was really bleeding," said Louis.

Linda called police who shot one of the pit bulls to death. The other has since been euthanized. Chrissy was killed in the attack. We went to the house police say is where the dog's lived. No one inside wanted to comment.

Louis, who is still in shock, also says he's glad his grand kids weren't there that day.

"I was so thankful my daughter didn't bring the kids over."

Absecon Police and Animal Control are investigating. Police say charges are pending against the owners of the pit bulls.
