Update: Hero left paralyzed feels sensation in right leg

Posted: Updated:
ROME, Ga. -

Good news! A 43-year-old father left paralyzed after risking his life to save a woman's young daughter from being washed away by a creek is doing better.

The Friends of Mike Patterson Trust, a group set up the family of Mike Patterson, of Rome, Ga., says that though Patterson remains hospitalized in intensive care, he is "showing small signs of progress. Mike is alert, but remains on a ventilator. The ventilator is hindering Mike's ability to talk, but he can mouth words with his lips."

A true hero, Patterson dove into Euharlee Creek in Rockmart to rescue the 9-year-old girl, but severed his spinal cord  in the process and was left paralyzed. The girl survived.

Patterson's mother, Vicki Jones, in addition to his son and the rest of family, maintain a close bedside vigil at the hospital. Jones provides regular updates on her son's condition at the Friends of Mike Patterson Facebook page -- https://www.facebook.com/Friendsofmikepatterson‎.

In Wednesday's update, Jones said, "Mike was smiling today ... and I felt good today for the first time."

Despite suffering from respiratory acidosis, pneumonia, a bacterial infection in his digestive tract, and a blood clot in his right arm, there is good news to report. Patterson's lungs "look a little better," says Jones, and thanks to a cooling pad, his temperature has become more stabilized. Though he is still on a ventilator, Patterson is taking a small number of breaths on his own.

But, perhaps the most encouraging news involves Patterson's right leg. While a physical therapist was bending his right leg earlier this week, Patterson mouthed, "Ouch." According to Jones, the therapist's eyes "got real big."

The therapist bent Patterson's right leg again and asked, "Can you feel that?" Patterson nodded in affirmation.

The Friends of Mike Patterson Trust continues to accept monetary donations from the public at large for Patterson's benefit. 100% of the monies collected by the Friends of Mike Patterson Trust go to benefit Mike Patterson.
