Body Found In Burning Car at Pennypack Park

Philadelphia, PA -
"Definitely shocking because it's a park you know," said neighborhood resident Nadim Papu when told of the discovery.

It happened in a place where geese and ducks float by peacefully. Bike riders and walkers come here for a quiet getaway. But neighbors were stunned Thursday morning when a body was found in a burning vehicle just a few hundred feet into Pennypack Park

"We always thought this neighborhood was safe, but not anymore I guess," Papu told Fox 29.

"I'm just kinda shocked you know. It's crazy," said John Adom who lives in the Evergreen Manor Apartments across from the park.

Just after 7 a.m., police and firefighters made the gruesome discovery in the trunk of a fiery Lexus 300 Series Sedan. Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives spent several hours pouring over the crime scene looking for clues.

"This is serious stuff," Adom said. "I can't think of such evil. Who would do something like that."

Bikers and walkers making their way through the park came upon crime scene tape near the burned out car and quickly left. Neighbors told Fox 29 they don't feel comfortable here  anymore.

"Lately something's going on in this park, the cops are here every other day," Papu said.

"They need more patrol, the bike patrol needs to do a little bit more patrolling down here that's all," said Alan Fisgaer, who lives up the block with his three daughters.

Detectives say they body was burned beyond recognition. The license plates and vehicle identification number had been removed from the car. Investigators hope surveillance cameras near the park entrance might give them a lead.

"We just want this place to be safe like it used to be," Papu added. "It's just not safe. I wouldn't step in there anymore."

Homicide detectives will wait for an autopsy to be done overnight by the medical examiner to determine the victim's identity and the cause of death. Anyone with information on this case should call the Homicide Unit or police.
