Eat fresh! Affordable organic food in your own backyard

Posted: Updated:

For so many economically disadvantaged Georgians, organic food is a privilege – not a right. But, a local non-profit is making sure that fresh food is available to all Georgians by making their dollars go the extra mile.

It's happening in an area that sounds like the open country fields.  But, this vast 5-acre garden is right in the middle of the city.

"Eighty percent of Americans live in cities, so I think it's important that we help people understand who grows their food, the quantity of their food and where their food comes from," Rashid Nuri, of Truly Living Well, said.

And, this food is grown in the Old Fourth Ward and sold at market every Friday.

Nuri said, "You can't get any fresher than us picking this morning as having it to market this afternoon."

But, fresh, organic food can be pricey when you buy it in the store. That's where Felicia Fernandes used to struggle with making healthy decisions.

Fernandes said, "You want to eat healthy and you want to make healthy choices, and you want your child to make healthy choices. But, when you look at it, you're like ‘That doesn't work for my family. It doesn't fit in my budget.'"

But, the non-profit, Wholesome Wave Georgia is changing that. For families receiving food stamps, their benefits are doubled when buying at a local farmers market making fresh, healthy food available to everyone.

Lolly Beck-Paner, of Wholesome Wave Georgia, said, "So, when a family comes to one of our partner markets, they can swipe the benefits card; and, let's say they want to use $20 of their benefits, we will give them $40 in tokens to use at the market."

The demand for fresh food is growing. Four years ago when this program started, Wholesome Wave Georgia doubled $3,000 to $6,000. This year, they're on pace to double $180,000 to $360,000.
