Armed Bandits Ignore New Cameras To Take Cash, Lottery Tickets

PHILADELPHIA -

It was just before 3 a.m. Friday morning when two bandits entered the 7-Eleven at 58th Street and Whitby Avenue. Once inside, their guns came out, and another violent armed robbery was under way here.

"Scary situation. Unfortunately these guys are trying to make a living, working hard, working a legitimate job and somebody puts their life in jeopardy," said police Capt. Ben Naish, of Southwest Detectives.

"Oh man, it's bad. It's bad all over," one customer told FOX 29 News. "That's why I don't come out at night."

Surveillance video from the Kingsessing store shows one gunman waving his weapon, demanding money and then emptying the cash register draw, as the cashier stands there terrified.

At one  point, a second gunman comes into the picture, places his gun up to the cashier's head and orders him to turn over lottery tickets along with the cash.

"Guys like this, that are brazen, chances are it's not the first time they've done anything," Naish said.

Police sources say this 7-Eleven has been the target of several armed robberies in recent months. At one point, the store literally closed down because of the robberies. It reopened with more than a dozen new surveillance cameras, but the holdups continue.

"The cameras have to be all over the place. It seems like this is a real magnet for robbers, unfortunately," Naish added.

Police are trying to determine if the two armed robbers might also be connected to several similar robberies across the city. In the meantime, police want you to take a good look at the video and give them a call.

"We're hopeful that somebody will recognize these guys and put a phone call in to Philadelphia Police. Call our tipline, and we'll get these guys off the street," Naish said.

Police also believe these gunmen may be connected to another robbery Friday night where cash and lottery tickets were stolen.
