DETROIT (WJBK) -

Jamie Mitchell was walking back from the store Friday morning with her six-year-old son, two-year-old daughter and boyfriend. Some thick weeds prevented the stroller from being pushed down the sidewalk, so they stepped into the street on Otis near Military. Within moments, two vans were in an accident at the intersection and one was spinning out of control coming right at them.

"It kind of happened so fast, I kind of like pushed my son out of the way. He didn't get hit," Jamie said.

"She pushed me out of the way, and then my mom fell," said Jeff Green. "She got hit by a car."

"Before you knew it, we were all hit," Jamie said.

Little Elizabeth was trapped in her stroller, and it was stuck underneath the bumper of the van.

"She got scratched all over her face," Jeff said.

"Six pedestrians came running up, and they had to lift the back of the van up to get my daughter out," Jamie said.

Elizabeth has a fractured knee. Boyfriend Michael Williams has stitches, scrapes and bruises. Jamie is on crutches with a nasty injury to her leg. Fortunately they should all be okay, but they are upset they ended up in harm's way because the grass hasn't been cut.

We contacted Mayor Dave Bing's office about the abandoned home and the overgrown lawn, asking them to come out and clean it up. However, it was a furlough day in the city, so we have yet to hear back.

"It's ridiculous," Jamie said. "We're supposed to use the sidewalk for safety, and we had to go around it."

"Just make it safe for parents to walk with their kids."
