Mich. residents ready to hit the road for July 4 holiday

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Nearly 1.4 million Michigan residents will hit the roads during the upcoming July 4 holiday.

AAA Michigan says that number is down about one percent from last year due to the holiday falling on a Thursday and a day less than last year's holiday period.

AAA says nearly 90 percent of travelers will go by vehicle where motorists will find cheaper gas than last year's holiday. According to the myFOX Gas Tracker, the average cost for a gallon of gas in the Detroit area is $3.50, compared to a year ago at $3.53.

Gas prices are down a whopping 55 cents over the past month. On June 3, Michigan residents paid an average of $4.05 per gallon.

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are joining other police agencies across Michigan by increasing patrols for drunken drivers over the holiday.

The stepped up patrols are in effect and will run into Sunday. They are funded by a federal grant through the state Office of Highway Safety Planning.

Michigan law enforcement officers made more than 3,700 traffic stops and arrested 126 suspected drunken drivers last year during the Fourth of July period crackdown. It included 23 arrests under the state's high blood-alcohol content law.
