Officer shoots suspect after allegedly refusing to drop gun

PHOENIX -

A Phoenix Police officer shot a 31-year-old suspect after he allegedly refused to put down his handgun and pointed it at the officer and a woman early Sunday morning.

A neighbor called officers after allegedly seeing a woman being choked by a suspect in the driveway of a home near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road.

When police arrived, they saw a 33-year-old woman outside the home. Officers say they told the woman to stay outside, but she went inside the home.

Officers followed her into the home and through a small hallway when they saw a 31-year-old suspect reportedly holding a handgun.

An officer immediately took out his gun and told the man to drop his gun.

The suspect allegedly refused to drop his gun and raised it in the direction of the officer and the woman.

Police say the officer feared for the safety of the woman and himself and fired at the suspect.

While officers were clearing the house, they found a 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg/hip area.

Both the suspect and the 39-year-old man were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers are still investigating how the 39-year-old man was injured.
