Youth Unemployment Rates

America's youth unemployment rate has not been below double digits since October 2008, and now experts warn the problem could grow to a European size crisis

The latest jobs report shows America's effective youth unemployment rate is 16.1 percent.

That means there are currently over 6.5 million 18 to 29 year olds unemployed, underemployed or simply have given up.

And the unemployment rate for 18 to 35 year olds in the U.S. Is higher than France, Britain, Japan, Germany and Canada.

"It's the highest sustained youth unemployment rate since World War 2. If you're a young person in America, there's a 1 in 6 chance you don't have a job," says Evan Feinberg, a Congressional candidate.

Europe's nearly 24 percent youth unemployment rate has sent thousands into the streets in mass protests in Spain and Greece. The European Union met this week and said youth unemployment is the most pressing issue Europe is facing.

Some say we could see a similar situation brewing in the United States that could increase America's youth unemployment rate.

Samuel Gregg, of the Action Institute says,"We have a situation of people being unwilling to hire them. We have a problem of youth skills not matching job requirements and we also have a high unemployment rate in general, which means that many of the jobs that you find many of the young people normally going into have been filled by older people. "

These filled jobs are pivotal for those looking to start their careers.

Experts put America only at a moderate threat level for reaching European size unemployment proportions, with states with right to work laws fairing better than others.
