A Lincoln Park woman has died after a large maple tree fell on her tent while she was camping at a state park in Lenawee County.
39-year-old Mary Hickling died after the tree fell Saturday night at Hayes State Park in Cambridge Township about 60 miles southwest of Detroit.
Cambridge Township Police Chief Larry Wibbleler tells The Daily Telegram of Adrian Hickling's two children, ages 7 and 11 were not hurt. Her husband was sitting by the camp fire at the time of the incident and also escaped injury. Hickling was pronounced dead later Sunday at ProMedica Herrick Hospital.
Hayes State Park manager Jim O'Brien said Monday the park, which was nearly filled to capacity, remained open through the course of the investigation, which continues at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and park level. He said the tree appeared healthy from the outside and showed no signs of rotting or distress.
"The maple tree had no signs of problems," he said, adding the weather was also favorable at the time of the incident. "The family remains in our thoughts and prayers," O'Brien said.
