Clothing bank in Chandler targeted by thieves

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

There are a lot of food banks in the valley, but not many clothing banks. The Clothes Cabin in Chandler helps people in need. But now, they've been hit by thieves.

The Clothes Cabin in Chandler is always a busy place. The line to get in is long, because shopping here is free for people in need.

"I think about 60 percent of our clients are children. Right now it's busy because the kids are going back to school. They start back on the 22nd. They are shopping for them today and every day," says Caryn Shoemaker.

Volunteers take in unused clothes, fix them up and put them on the racks for needy shoppers. It isn't easy getting kids clothes. Many come in stained and worn out, and not wearable.

But they had a clothing drive last month and received 20 bags filled with clothes for kids.

Sometimes the storage room gets really busy, and a lot of clothes were stored there. They didn't have enough room so they left their bags outside for one hour and they were gone.

Caryn couldn't believe it.

"I was furious because it is so hard for us to get children's clothes and for them just to be gone was so disappointing. We just don't have lot to give."

The idea is to give 50 needy kids two nice outfits for school. Caryn worries she may not be able to provide that this year.

"I am in a panic because we barely get through the back to school needs -- then they come back for Christmas."

Caryn is hoping you may be able to help.
