Asbestos Scare At Philly Accident Investigation Unit

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A scare at the Philadelphia police accident investigation unit today, but not because of any case officers are on.

Workers found what they believe to be asbestos in an air conditioning unit at the building in North Philadelphia today.

The place was evacuated and temporarily shut down while crews started testing the building and air to make sure it's safe.

The Fraternal Order of Police says officers can't be expected to work in dangerous conditions.

"Officer safety is number one, whether you're on the street or you're inside. I mean, you're inside working. You're supposed to feel safe. You know, if you're breathing asbestos... you can't have that. You gotta be able to live and expect to work in a humane place," says John McNesby, the president.

The mayor's office tells FOX 29 that health officials didn't see any asbestos with the naked eye at the building. But they're doing more in-depth tests to make sure.

Officers will work out of a different building in the meantime.
