TV movie “Sharknado is a hit on social media

The SyFy Channel followed a recipe as timeless as the 450-million-year-old monster it selected as its key ingredient, Thursday: Take thousands of sharks, use a hurricane to herd them toward Los Angeles, stick those predators in tornadoes, then drop them on flooded streets and you get "Sharknado" -- TV horror movie gold and a social media tsunami.

"It's the summertime," Silverback Social CEO Chris Dessi said. "People are bored. They're on Twitter. They see something that's funny on the SyFy Channel and they want to be a part of it."

Dessi helps companies grow and network and promote using the Internet. Like most we found, he opted not to watch the Sharknado premiere, but did see the trailer gather more than 700,000 YouTube hits in two days and watch "#sharknado" trend nationally on Twitter at a pace of 5,000 tweets per minute.

"That's unheard of," Dessi said. "It's interesting. It's fascinating, but it's also symptematic of what happens on Twitter."

Spoiler Alert: At one point, the male lead in Sharknado exclaims: "Just can't sit back and watch this." But apparently some people somewhere in the real world did sit back and watch. And they were so impressed (amused? disturbed? saddened?) they took to the Internet to tell their friends.

"It's just like: Whoa. Out of control. Like seriously out of control," one man told Fox 5.

"I guess people like spectacle," a young woman near Hunter College said. "Anything a little stupid they'll watch."

Not all who shared thoughts and reactions were funny guys or bad-TV afficionados either. The American Red Cross tweeted out a list of preparedness tips to survive a real Sharknado.

"It's so outlandish and ridiculous," one man said. "People need comic relief."

It seems safe we won't offend anyone by calling this a terrible movie. Terribly awesome, Yes -- but still terrible.

"It's so bad it's good, right? It's juicy," Dessi said.

And thanks to social media, this B/C/D-list made-for-TV movie received as much online buzz as a more major motion picture.

"I think it's fantastic for a movie like that," Dessi said. "Frankly, I think it's kind of genius."

If nothing else, it now assures us we haven't seen the last Anonymous Rex, Frankenfish or Sharknado (YouTube those titles if you want to see more).
