Cubs claim OF Gillespie off waivers from Giants

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The Chicago Cubs have claimed outfielder Cole Gillespie off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Gillespie was hitless in nine at-bats over three games with the Giants before he was designated for assignment on Tuesday. He will join the Cubs before Sunday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Manager Dale Sveum says Gillespie probably will play against left-handers.

The 29-year-old Gillespie was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2006 draft. He is a .218 hitter in 53 games over parts of 3 seasons with the Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gillespie played college ball with Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney at Oregon State. They helped the Beavers win the national title in 2006.
