SPCA: Act quickly if you see pet in hot vehicle

Posted: Updated:

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - "If you see something, say something." That phrase also applies to pets.

The Suffolk SPCA on Long Island is urging people to take immediate action if they see a pet left in a hot car.

Chief Roy Gross says a hot car - even with the windows partly down - can give pets deadly dehydration, heat stroke and even brain damage. But there are steps that could save their lives.

Note the vehicle's make, model, color and plate number. Go to nearby stores and ask the managers to page the owner.

You can also call the police or the Suffolk County SPCA. They have the authority to enter the vehicle and rescue the pet.
