Attorney: Clayton County police chief suspended

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

An attorney for Clayton County Police Chief Greg Porter confirms that the police chief has been suspended.

The unpaid suspension is in effect pending the outcome of a criminal investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, FOX 5 Atlanta's Paul Yates has learned.

The investigation began a year ago and involves grant payments made to for Porter before he became chief for monitoring offenders in court-mandated DUI programs.

Porter's attorney, Manny Arora, said that the suspension came as a surprise.

"He has cooperated. They've got all the financial records, all the billing statements, the bank records, everything," said Arora.

Porter has been police chief since 2010.

Clayton County Commission Chairman Jeff Turner said a deputy chief has been named acting head of the Clayton Police Department.

"I hope that the GBI concludes their investigation and we have some direction to go in fairly soon here," said Turner.

The status of the investigation of the suspended chief has not been spelled out.

Porter's lawyer says he will be in line for back pay if he is reinstated to his position as chief.
