Animal abuse suspect grants jailhouse interview

Posted: Updated:

A man is accused of animal abuse and adult abuse -- police say he wasn't properly caring for his elderly mother, father and their pets.

His mother was found dead in their van.

"The big question is do you know when you're going to die? Does anybody in this room know when their time is going to come?"

Gregory Stout says he had no idea his mom died inside of their roach infested van as the family drove from a camp in Quartzsite to Phoenix. When he got to the valley, he realized his mom had passed, so he and his brother called 911.

Could he have taken any additional steps that would have saved his mother's life?

"Perhaps," he replied.  "Well I was thinking what I was doing to get them out of the heat, to get them into cooler shelter was the best."

Inside of the van, 35 cats and dogs were covered in feces. Police say the pets were starving, abused, and sick.

"For the record I'm not an animal person.  I don't kill them, I don't hurt them, I just don't want them in my life," said Stout.

Why were the animals there?

"Because my mom thought she was a doctor."

Stout adds that his mother wouldn't let him get rid of the pets.

"She just liked taking care of animals, but she took it a little too far and now I'm feel like I'm paying a price that I shouldn't be paying."

Stout says before the road trip, his mother had collapsed, but was alive when they put her in the van. He says his only intention was to get her help at a homeless shelter in Phoenix.

"That was my intention.. try and get them all to a better situation.. now I feel like I' being punished for it."

And Stout's dad had an injury from a broken hip.

Police say his parents were too old to be traveling and should have gotten help soon. As for the pets, we're told most of them will have to be put down.
