NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The last thing anyone wants to do in this heat is take the stairs, but in another effort to keep New Yorkers slim and trim that is exactly what Mayor Michael Bloomberg is now proposing.

Bloomberg announced two pieces of stair-inducing legislation that will soon be put before city council affecting commercial and residential buildings.

The first bill proposes that all new buildings and buildings undergoing major renovations be required to provide clear access to at least one stairwell as well as post signs encourage stair use

The second bill would allow the use of hold-open devices in stairwells, which as the name suggests are devices that hold doors open.

Unlike Bloomberg's other health policies, which take away options like what you can eat or drink, this proposal isn't banning anything like elevators or escalators.

Officials estimate that the bills will become law within the year. City officials also want to stress developers that do not follow it will not be fined or be forced to make any changes.
