DuPage County officials say heroin overdose deaths are occurring at a record pace this year.
Coroner Richard Jorgensen says the county outside Chicago is averaging nearly one heroin overdose death a day this month.
Jorgensen tells the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights there have been 18 confirmed heroin overdose deaths in DuPage County so far this year. He says 15 more deaths suspected to be heroin related are awaiting toxicology reports.
Jorgensen says the county is likely to surpass the 38 heroin-related deaths in 2012. There were 27 in 2011.
Roosevelt University's Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy director Kathie Kane-Willis says there is no comprehensive approach in getting the word out on the hazards facing heroin users. She notes the state of Illinois is doing little about the problem.
