Boy, 13, dies after being shot during robbery

FOREST PARK, Ga. -

"They really, really destroyed his dreams for $5 and a truck they didn't even take."

Samaria Diaz, stricken with grief, recalled the last painful moments of her brother, 13-year-old Steven Galindo Diaz. She says he died after being shot late Monday night.

Clayton County police say Galindo was helping his sister with her car in front of her home in the 400 block of Sylvia Drive about 11 p.m. Monday. The young teen was putting air in one of the car tires when a red sport-utility vehicle pulled up and two men stepped out.

Police say two men stepped out of the SUV and approached Diaz and Galindo. The men demanded they hand over their keys and belongings. Police say one of the suspects snatched a necklace from Diaz's neck.

The second suspect tried to start her car and got angry when it wouldn't start, police say.

At some point, one of the suspects started shooting at the vehicle and the siblings, police said.  Diaz and Galindo both tried to run away, but the 13-year-old could not escape the gunfire.

Diaz said, "The other dude with the shot gun, he just starts pointing at the truck... and he starts shooting in the windshield. When he shoots at it, me and [Galindo] were about to run. I grabbed his hand and I'm like, 'Come on, little brother. Come on, little brother." And, we try to run and as soon as I get up to like probably two steps after the tree, he says, 'Samaria, come back. I got shot.' He said, 'Come back. It hurts me.'

"I run back. I put him in my hands and I'm like, 'Stay with me. Stay with me.'," she said.

Samaria said that she performed CPR on her brother, but he died at the hospital.

Detectives canvassed the area for leads in the shooting as Stevens' mother, Norma Diaz, coped with her loss.

A prayer vigil was held on Tuesday night near the spot where the teen was murdered.

The grief-stricken mother told FOX 5's George Franco that her son loved sports and helped everyone.

Family members say Steven had just gotten his football gear Monday. They say he dreamed of going to California and aspired to be a Marine.

Clayton County police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to notify them as they continue their search for the suspects.

A fund has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses. Donations can be made to the "Funeral Fund for Steven Galindo Díaz" at any Bank of America location under the account of Norma Díaz.
