Bear Hollow Zoo: Athens' free animal adventure

ATHENS, Ga. -

Don't let an empty wallet mean an empty summer for you. Check out Bear Hollow Zoo! It's a free attraction that's one of Georgia's best hidden gems waiting for you to discover.

Now, Athens might be most famous for The ‘Dawgs, but there are many other animals worth seeing there. This summer, your road trip to Athens could also be the perfect family daytrip to a place like Bear Hollow Zoo.

And, it's ideal if you're on a tight budget, too. You get a chance to see spectacular wildlife up close and it only costs the gas to get there.

It's a wonderful home to 25 of Georgia's most notable residents tucked inside of Athens' Memorial Park. It's a place that locals rush to faster than a beaver to a dam.

Clint Murphy, park coordinator, cares for the animals of all shapes and sizes at the zoo. He says bringing them from snout to nose with humans is what the Bear Hollow does best.

"People will come in and say, ‘Oh, I thought you had three bears, and it's ‘Yes, there's one right up there!' And, just the looks of amazement. They'll remember that for the rest of their lives."
