Vacant fire station to be used by group for homeless vets

A vacant South Side fire station could become home to an organization that provides housing and educational services to homeless female veterans under an ordinance introduced Wednesday to the City Council.

The Emanuel administration introduced an ordinance authorizing a lease agreement with Doll Inc. for use of a vacant fire station at 6843 S. Harper Ave., a statement from the mayor's office said. The property would be used as office space.

The decommissioned fire station has no other municipal use, the statement said. Doll Inc. will use the 2nd floor for office space and the 1st floor for storage and meetings.

The group provides housing and educational services to homeless female veterans in southern Cook County.

The City will not provide Doll Inc. with any financial assistance, allowing it to occupy the allows space for $1 thorugh Dec. 31, 2015. The organization would be responsible for maintenance, security, custodial services, and payment of utilities.
