Some question afternoon party held for city workers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Several hundred city of Atlanta employees attended a carnival on Thursday. The workers were permitted time away their jobs to have what a spokesperson called "a working party to foster fellowship".

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management sponsored the safety carnival, which drew several hundred employees. The party featured music, food and games, and included a dunking booth and rock-climbing.

Scheree Rawles, a water department spokesperson, said that the party was held to promote camaraderie among workers and also to try out safety products.

Rawles said that work around the city wasn't neglected because of the party.

"Some people may have come before they go into the office, some may be coming after," said Rawles. "We are making sure that all that needs to be completed in the city and done in the city is being done. "

Some ratepayers who lived near the water complex where the party was held contacted FOX 5, saying they had questions.

"If it was truly for just a meeting purpose or for safety standards, why do we have all the theatrics of it. Why are we having games," said one woman.

In response to the questions, water officials said that they will attempt to hold future parties after working hours.

The budget for the party has not been released.
